Professor Karin Askham

Rector

A photographic practitioner by origin, her practice as a photographer has resulted in her work being exhibited nationally and internationally at some of the world leading art institutions. She continues to write on photography, commission work and curate public programmes. Karin’s photographic work has been featured on album covers and numerous publications including Attitude, iD, The Face, NME and Tank magazine.

Karin has worked for nearly 30 years in a number of academic and senior management roles in highly regarded Universities.

She has spent over five years in the role as Dean of the School of Media at London College of Communication, UAL. Askham’s portfolio has included undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Photography, Sound Arts, Film and Television, Media Theory, Journalism, PR and Publishing. Her previous post was Associate Dean of the Graduate School at London College of Fashion, UAL, supporting the transformation of the postgraduate teaching portfolio of the College. Karin’s extensive teaching career has built on experimental approaches to the notions of the ‘staged moment’ and culminated in the founding of the world’s first BA and MA in Fashion Photography courses at UAL that has been imitated worldwide.

Karin has been on the judging panel for a number of high profile international art and photographic awards and worked on projects for young people and social justice with NGOs and charitable organisations such Jay Z’s Shaun Carter Foundation.
