Academic Quality

Academic Quality and Assurance

CSVPA is a private education provider.

From a legal perspective Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts (CSVPA) is a trading division of Cambridge Arts and Sciences Limited (“CASL”), which also contains the trading entity CATS College Cambridge. CASL is owned by Cambridge Education Group Colleges Limited, which is in turn owned by Cambridge Education Group.

The higher education programmes delivered at CSVPA are validated by either Kingston University or Falmouth University. The further education programmes delivered at CSVPA are accredited by the University of the Arts London Awarding Body and Trinity.

Governance at the school is defined by:

  • the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) UK Quality Code
  • our university partner Academic Regulations
  • CEG Board of Governors (in alignment with the Committee of University Chairs (CUC) Higher Education Code of Governance)

Board of Governors

Cambridge Education Group (CEG) and its Board of Directors have legal responsibility for CSVPA including compliance with UK company law and all other relevant laws, regulations and codes of practice.  In relation to CSVPA the CEG Board acts as the ultimate Board of Governors of the college.

CSVPA has its own Board which monitors qualitative and quantitative information to oversee and implement the strategic development, governance and management for all courses; through regular monthly meetings the Board receives reports on the recruitment, retention and progression of students and analyses of educational and financial information to enable its members to discharge their responsibilities for standards, financial planning and investment in staff, accommodation and learning resources. It receives copies of reports by external agencies on academic provision offered by the School (such as reports from its validating Universities, QAA, etc.). CSVPA Board reports through its Managing Director to the CEG Executive Team.

Membership of CSVPA Board:
Core membership of the Board: Managing Director(who acts as Chairman); Head of CSVPA, Finance Business Partner, Marketing Director of CSVPA, Academic Director, CSVPA Strategy & Development Director, Director of Operational Quality and HR Business Partner. 

The following are invited to the Board at regular intervals to report on and discuss matters specific to their areas of responsibility: Group Director of Property & Operations, Head of Student Services & Compliance, Head of Welfare and Boarding, Operations Manager, Student Services Manager and Attendance Manager.

 

Academic Governance and Management:

Senior Leadership Group (SLG)

CSVPA Senior Leadership Group is tasked with oversight of the development of school curricula and the enhancing of pedagogy in close consultation with both staff and the student body and in accord with the relevant sector benchmarks. In monitoring the quality of teaching and learning in the school the Senior Leadership Group will:

  • Promote the enhancement of effective teaching, learning and assessment
  • Facilitate the development and implementation of quality assurance policies and procedures necessary to maintain academic standards and teaching quality in all programmes of study
  • Monitor and evaluate associated strategies, including: student recruitment and retention, forward planning for estates
    requirements in relation to programme delivery and growth
  • Act on recommendations from CEG’s Board of Governors and the CEG Executive Team and the CSVPA Board
  • Consider matters raised by Boards of Study and other committees and make appropriate recommendations to the Head of School or CEG board of Governors (refer matters to other committees as appropriate)
  • Monitor action taken following receipt of reports from external examiners, partner Universities, Professional, Accrediting or Statutory Bodies.
  • Review key performance indicators (including: progression/ retention data, student achievement and success)
  • Note actions related to quality enhancement activities (including: assessment processes, the sharing of good practice and continuing professional development)
  • Consider changes to programme delivery (including: modules, units of study, proposals for new courses and modes of study)
  • Nominate and approve student representatives to attend Senior Leadership Group
  • Consider any issues related to ‘the quality of the student experience’ raised by Student Staff Consultative Committees and the School Student Forum
  • Advise the Head of School on resource matters relating to course delivery
  • Monitor the implementation of the school QAA action plan (and the plans responsiveness to the QAA Quality Code)

Internal Quality Committee (IQC)

The role of the Internal Quality Committee (IQC) is to ensure the School maintains oversight of the enhancement, development and monitoring of internal quality assurance policy and processes; and in so doing, is able to identify and disseminate good practice and innovation in learning, teaching and student support. The committee is to promote staff and student awareness of, and engagement with, the Quality Code and subject benchmark statements. A student representative, or the ‘Student Liaison Officer’ will be a member of this committee.

Membership of IQC:

Chaired by Academic Director; Course Director BA Fashion Design, Course Director BA Graphics & Illustration, Course Director MA in Art & Design, Course Director Graduate Diploma in Art & Design, Student Liaison Officer.

Board of Study

Board of Study is a forum for the discussion of matters relating to higher education fields and courses. Boards of Study make recommendations to Heads of School and the Senior Leadership Group and as appropriate the CSVPA Board at least three times per academic year. BoS is responsible for considering the Key Monitoring Information, including:

  • External examiner reports and responses
  • Outcomes of the National Student Survey(NSS)
  • Results of the Destination of Leavers in HE survey (DLHE)
  • Recommendations from validations and Internal Subject Reviews
  • Course Metrics
  • Course performance data
  • Agree actions for inclusion in the Course monitoring reports
  • Receive and approve the Course Enhancement Plans
  • Receive the Course Enhancement Plan
  • School Summary reports
  • Monitor the progress of the course enhancement
  • Consider and recommend changes to modules, fields, titles
  • Consider documents prepared for validation and internal subject review
  • Agree arrangements for Staff Student Consultative Committees and consider any issues raised by them
  • Advise the Head of School (or equivalent) on resource matters relating to the field

Membership

Chaired by the Head of School or a senior member of the course team; Relevant Course Directors & Leaders, or their nominees; Normally at least two student representatives in attendance (Chair to ensure that two student representatives have confirmed their attendance to ensure adequate representation); May include representatives from support departments, such as Library and Learning Services, as appropriate.

Staff | Student Consultative Committees (SSCC)

Staff Student Consultative Committees are forums for the consideration of student opinion and feedback in relation to academic matters.  Board of Study meets at least twice per academic year (once in each teaching block) Both the SLG and the BoS are understood to have a close reciprocal relationship with this committee so as to ensure transparency of engagement between the School and its students at all key levels.

  • To facilitate dialogue between students and academic staff by providing a formal channel of communication in relation to academic matters
  • To discuss and address (where appropriate) comments, queries, suggestions, concerns and feedback from course representatives in relation to academic matters
  • To consider student feedback, for example issues raised by course representatives, from Mid-Module Reviews or level based questionnaires
  • To consider any matters on which the Faculty/School/Department wishes to seek student views
  • To ensure that discussions and any resulting actions are documented and fed back to the student body
  • To nominate those student representatives to attend the Board of Study
  • To refer matters to the Board of Study and Faculty Forum as appropriate

Membership of IQC:

Chair:    the Committee should agree a Chair from amongst its members (this may be a student if appropriately experienced individuals are elected to the Committee)
Members:    elected course representatives of all years/levels of a course and all constituent courses; staff representatives, including course leader(s) and other staff with key responsibilities

Note: the number of staff in attendance should be limited to ensure that student membership predominates

School Student Forum


The School Student Forum is a meeting of all student course/year representatives that gathers once a term. The primary purposes of the forum are to: raise and discuss issues that are not necessarily covered in the Staff Student Consultative Committee meetings; enable student representatives to develop a shared understanding of the “student experience” at CSVPA; and through this shared understanding, to enable students to contribute more cohesively to quality monitoring and enhancement in the school. With these purposes in mind, we have structured the forum to support an approach that enables students to play a prominent role in assessing the quality and standard of their own academic experience.

The CSVPA Student Liaison Officer plays a key role in facilitating and encouraging student engagement.

  • The School Student Forum should meet at least twice per academic year.
  • SSCCs should be scheduled to meet prior to the School Student Forum
  • Forum meetings will normally take place prior to other Board meetings and provide reports (at least orally) to the Senior Leadership Group.

Membership

Chaired by the Academic Director: Deputy Head of Welfare, Student Liaison Officer, Student representatives for all courses/levels.
