Our MA Art & Design student, Miao Zhang, has taken part in a short interview to tell us what she aspires to and how she has found her time at CSVPA so far!

  • What dream career are you working towards?

Either a Media Designer, UI Designer or Stylist.
The reason why I choose this is because, I studied Interactive media in Northumbria University, and I loved the process when I was designing the application and platforms. This encouraged me to work towards this industry. So I label myself as a potential UI designer. In terms of becoming a Stylist, I have always been interested in fashion since I was young. My friends also love my style and I believe it is one of my talents. Thus, I think maybe in the future I can also be a stylist and work with photographers and fashion models.

  • So far, what projects/ experiences have you enjoyed so far?

I have mainly enjoyed designing an app to help people protect hedgehogs.
In the last 10 years, hedgehog numbers have fallen by 30%, and there are now thought to be fewer than one million left in the UK. They are disappearing from our countryside as fast as tigers are worldwide. So, I made an app to make people aware of this problem in order to protect the hedgehogs. These concerned people can download the app where there is a society there and people can discuss the problem by using the app. Also, I made hedgehog emojis.

  • In your course, tell us about your style and passion?

In each of my projects I like to tell a story. I think that this is my style from attracting people to know and get interest on my designing works.
The reason why I like to tell stories through my design is because when I look back to my designing works, I always make a presentation video. This tells people what the background of my work is and help people to understand it better. Usually, I use animation to tell these stories.

  • What are you looking forward to at CSVPA, and why?

I am looking forward to CSVPA helping me get an internship in Hearst Magazine. Firstly although I am an Interactive media designer, I have always been interested in fashion, and would love to work in an environment like at Hearst.  Also, it is a really big challenge for me to work in other country. I believe it is good to have a working experience in UK and I would like to stay in UK, the best way for me to do this is to get a working opportunity. Working in Hearst Magazine is my dream, because I am in love in with fashion, I like how people work in fashion departments and I want to be a part of them. Not only as a media designer, UI Designer, but also this could give me the opportunity to become a stylist.

  • Could we have three pictures of the top three pieces of work you are most proud of and tell us why? (See Images in blog)
  1. 'Prickle Emoji': The Emoji project to raise awareness for hedgehogs. This helped inform people to protect hedgehogs in UK.
  2. 'Canadian coins': Animation for helping children or foreigners to understand Canadian coins (See Facebook post)
  3. 'The Warlord characters': Unfinished D&AD competition board game characters’ design (See below)

  • What inspires and motivates you in your work?

My ideas always come so fast. Every day, I love to watch things like films, Instagram, go to exhibitions and shops, watch news etc to encourage my creativity. Everything in my life can inspire me. I find things everywhere.

  • How has CSVPA helped you so far?

Our tutor provides a lot of theories about art, and teaches us many different ways in how to come up with ideas. For example, we write a blog every day. This really helps me to find out what I am really interested in.
