Lorna Whattam

UK , CSVPA, Art & Design Foundation

I knew I wouldn’t be able to study Art and Design to the level I required on Gurnsey, so I started to look for colleges in England. I looked round several, but Cambridge won me over – it’s a beautiful city, steeped in history, which has had an influential and inspirational effect on my work.

When I came to interview at Cambridge School of Visual and Performing Arts I was blown away by the standard of student work. They had the best facilities for a Foundation year I had seen and I was really impressed with the amount of time the teachers gave to the students. The interaction with tutors here is much closer than you’ll get at any university, there’s a close-knit, family atmosphere - I’ve really enjoyed the quality of teaching I’ve had here too. Also, I really appreciate the devotion of the tutors to their students.

Our final project was based on the theme of ‘Stories from Around the World.’ For inspiration, I like to look at the history of a place, so I chose a Native American story which I worked into my designs. These designs were then displayed at a Fashion show at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge. I think that will be the highlight of my time at CSVPA when I look back, along with the trip to New York in January, which was amazing!

The biggest challenge of the past year has been the adjustment from A level to Foundation. There is a much bigger work load, and the quality of work needs to be a lot higher. However, now I am leaving CSVPA, I can see it has given me a much greater understanding of different cultures and a greater confidence to speak up. CSVPA has taught me to be a more confident individual.

Lorna is now at the University College of the Arts studying BA Fashion.
