The Art and Design Summer School ideal for...

Students aged between 15 and 18 who are potentially interested in undertaking further studies in Art and Design, or who would like to further their skills and knowledge of the subject.

  • Intensive classes with professional artists (30 hours per week)
  • Evening social activities included

  • No English lessons included - international students will require a good level of English.

The Art & Design Summer School is held at Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts (CSVPA) in the heart of Cambridge. CSVPA is the UK’s leading provider of Art & Design, Drama and Music pathway programmes, helping students make ambitious decisions about their futures. Our approach to creative learning is unique, highly personalised and guaranteed to ensure students meet their full potential.

The School provides a state-of-the-art, purpose built campus for many Art & Design disciplines including Photography, Fashion and Film. Students make use of darkrooms, fashion studios, cutting and dye rooms and Mac suites. A large dining room and outdoor patio form the heart of Bridge House campus.

We also have a dedicated team of activity organisers that will help you make the most out of your spare time in the UK, including excursions to London, visits to museums and art galleries, outings to theatres, cinemas and concerts and a variety of sports.

Specialist options available

This course is designed to provide students with a broad working knowledge of a range of specialist disciplines within art and design. It is ideal for students serious about pursuing further studies or a career in art and design. With direction from professional artists, classes are intensive and students are encouraged to produce a high standard of work in a different specialist area each week.

International students should have at least an intermediate level of English and can choose to combine their specialist weeks with separate weeks of Intensive English.

For 2012 the following options are available:

» Option A: Fashion and Textiles

Offering an introduction to fashion design and illustration. Experiment with:

  • mixed-media techniques
  • fabric manipulation and draping
  • machining
  • garment manufacture
  • free machine embroidery
  • hand stitching
  • dyeing

As a project you will customise a white T-shirt using textiles techniques, fabric dyes, paints and trimmings.

Start dates: 01 July, 08 July, 15 July, 22 July.

» Option B: Photography: Digital & Film

You will also use Cambridge as your inspiration to create an image portfolio. You will learn how to use different cameras and settings for best effect.

  • During the digital photography component you will learn to manipulate and print digital images on a computer before printing electronically.
  • During the film photography component you will learn all about taking and developing your own photographs from initial concept to printed image, including wet process to develop film in black and white and colour in the darkroom.

If you have your own digital SLR or traditional Film SLR camera, please bring it with you.

» Option C: Applied Craft

This programme will introduce students to a wide range of materials, techniques and artists. Offering a broad introduction to art in three dimensions, each week will be different but, if taken as a six-week programme can provide a head start to future study in 3D Art & Design.

  • Week 1 - 01 July: Jewellery - Create contemporary jewellery using a range of techniques and materials.
  • Week 2 - 08 July: Sculpture - Create an individual piece of sculpture through experimentation with materials and ideas.
  • Week 3 - 15 July: Painting - learn to use a variety of media such as watercolour, acrylic, oils and pastels, using Cambridge as inspiration.
  • Week 4 - 22 July: Drawing - Learn to draw from life, still life, objects, models and outside in different media, using shade, perspective and line.
  • Week 5 - 29 July: Printmaking - Learn to use different techniques such as monoprinting and etching, using the environment as a starting point.
  • Week 6 - 05 August: Interior Design - Learn core skills and techniques such as measurement, drawing, modelmaking and working with light, colour, atmosphere and special effects.

Breakfast is served at 07.30-08.30am daily.

Accommodation & meals

We take great care to ensure that students are safe, comfortable and happy. Students stay in residential accommodation (College Houses) about 20-25 minutes' walk from the campus. All College Houses are closely vetted and supervised by trained staff; they vary in size, accommodating from 5 to 40 students. Most rooms are single with private shower / wc.

Meals
Students have breakfast, lunch and evening meals in the new cafeteria on campus at Bridge House.

Special diets
Students with special medical or religious dietary requirements must inform us when booking.

Excursions
Saturday excursions are compulsory for under 18 year old students. These excursions are included in the weekly fee. Packed lunches are provided on full-day excursions.

Christopher Maughan, MSIAD Art & Design
Chris is Head of CSVPA, a professional designer-maker and teaches Theatre Arts.

"I have been exhibiting as a visual artist since I was 14 years old gaining my first commission at the age of 15. High profile clients include Saatchi and Saatchi and the BBC and of many TV characters the most notable is Nobby the Sheep!

I am now Head of Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts and also manage the provision of A level Art at our academic sister college, CATS Cambridge.

What I you enjoy most about CSVPA is helping students fulfil their artistic ambitions with a team of dedicated and experienced tutors."

Tiina graduated with a first class honours degree from London College of Fashion and has been designing and making clothes since she was very young. As well as working in the fashion department at CSVPA, Tiina runs her own online business selling clothing and photographic prints.
