Access to Higher Education - Guaranteed Progression
Any student who has already decided that they wish to focus on Fashion Design or Graphics and who is looking for guaranteed progression onto the Kingston University awarded BA (Hons) Fashion Design or BA (Hons) Graphics and Illustration at CSVPA.
During the programme you will develop:
- a portfolio of work to support your transition to BA application
- learning skills for undergraduate study in art & design
- study, research and project management skills.
You will be introduced to UK Art and Design practices, allowing you to broaden and extend your specialist Art and Design skills in preparation for further study at undergraduate level.

Guaranteed entry to our Kingston University awarded BA (Hons) degrees
The Access to Higher Education programme is a flexible course with multiple entry dates. We would recommend that students complete a 2 semester programme beginning in either September (ending in June) or January (ending in September).
Upon successful completion of the Access to Higher Education programme, students are guaranteed a place onto:
Year 1 of:
- BA (Hons) Fashion Design
- BA (Hons) Graphics & Illustration
Depending on previous qualifications, portfolio and English Language.

What is a Kingston University awarded degree?
This means that students studying the BA Fashion Design / Graphics & Illustration programmes at CSVPA are awarded the same qualification and degree certificate as would a student studying at Kingston University.
- Our two undergraduate degrees have been designed in collaboration with, and approved by, Kingston University.
- We are the only art college in the world to be awarded the right to offer these programmes.
- Students will spend all 3 years of their degree at CSVPA, Cambridge.
Course breakdown
The Access to Higher Education programme is made up of 5 compulsory subjects:
Photography
This module will deepen knowledge and understanding of a subject specialism, improve practical and critical skills for the development of studio practice and develop an appropriate body of work which highlights your understanding, knowledge and skills.
Presentation Skills
The aim of this module is to become more familiar with making commentaries relating to art and design practices. To be able to conduct a critical/ historical analysis of an area of study relevant to your studio practice in negotiation with tutors, using appropriate course material. To understand and apply ICT in making presentations
Drawing for Research
This module is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of visual language. You will be introduced to a range of materials, approaches, techniques; through which you will be encouraged to explore the ‘grammar’ of picture making. The ability to record thoughts and communicate ideas with images is an essential tool for all artists and designers. The skills you will develop in this unit are central to creative development and can be used in all practice based aspects of the programme.
Technical Skills
Aimed at developing an understanding of key technical skills. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of key software applications, a range of techniques to be employed in the making of creative work as well as how to produce (manufacture) appropriate outcomes.
English Preparation
Your progress will be assessed by regular internal tests, including IELTS-based tests. Your final grades for the module are determined by an end-of-course IELTS examination, which is externally examined.

John has worked in the UK and internationally as a commercial freelance Illustrator/Designer for over 20 years, serving clients such as Penguin Books, Harper Collins, BBC, Random House, Oxford University Press, Dutton, Ladybird,Scholastics, Usborne, Procter & Gamble, Cadbury Schwepps, Virgin Airways, Macmillan, The Observer, Speedo, Co-op and Cambridge University Press.
He joined CSVPA in 2001 and has seen many students grow into successful graphic designers and illustrators within the supportive environment of CSVPA.

Head of Fashion
Jane Herzog MA
Head of Fashion & Surface Design
Jane trained in fashion design at UCA (Epsom), graduating in 1981. She has more than 15 years' experience as a fashion designer for most high street fashion retailers including Top Shop, H&M and Marks & Spencers. She worked as a fashion designer from 1981 until 1997 and has been lecturing since 1997.
